I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. O'Brien last weekend at a seminar and have seen many of his students in action at the All Ireland TKD Championships. All of them are lovely people and they are an excellent addition to the union.

What is the best thing GM Kim ever taught you?
So far, the best thing that GM Kim has taught me is to be relaxed.....until the final snap of any technique. Intellectually, this was not a new concept. He could see that I had a "yes sir,-- of course" sort of expression on my face and so he says, "ok - now let's get some water". I was thinking to myself, "I don't need any water, we have hardly done anything yet". Then I found out what the water was for. Soon it was all over the mat around my feet as I threw turning kick after turning kick, splashing various amounts with each successive kick. "You are making a mess on my mat", GM Kim said to me..."now, do you see what I mean about relaxing?" Since then, I splash less and less and am enjoying passing on the lesson to my black belts.

What is the most amazing thing you ever saw Grandmaster Kim do?
Cutting the apple on Master Meany's stomach using a sword, while blind-folded. That is truly amazing to me...

What will you always remember about GM Kim?
That he is capable, caring, intelligent and funny all at the same time -- and that he appreciates the opportunities to enjoy life and each other.

What is your favorite Grandmaster Kim expression?
His facial expression, when he leans his head back slightly, extends his neck, raises his eyebrows -- all as if to say "come on...really?...your're kidding me right?"
What do you like best about Grandmaster Kim's classes?
That he enjoys himself - it is contageous...

What is the best thing GM Kim ever taught you?
How to be a martial artist and a teacher; to always give your best and to believe in your own ability.
What is the most amazing thing you ever saw Grandmaster Kim do?
Too numerous, but…his blindfolded eyes and his hands on a sword heading towards the apple on my stomach comes to mind. People have asked me if I was scared and truth be told…no, not at all, I have 100% confidence in Grand Master Kim.
What will you always remember about GM Kim?
His generosity in teaching me how to kick and punch. His effortless side kick and a reverse punch that is unstoppable. The power and precision he generates in patterns with everything from a middle block to a bow wrist.
What is your favorite Grandmaster Kim expression?
At a Championship in New Hampshire, seeing a competitor from another school dressed in a particularly colorful do bok:

GMK: “Yeah John, why don’t you wear one of those?”

Me: No sir.

GMK: “You know, I’ve never seen anything good come out of something like that”

Me: Yes, sir.

Others:

Motivational technique: “You know, you really stink.”

“When you hit, I mean, you really gotta hit.”

“Something like that.”

What do you like best about Grandmaster Kim's classes?
Learning something about taekwon do and/or myself, in every class.

Grandmaster Kim and I, had our life's path cross back in the mid seventies.
At the same time I met Grandmaster Kim I also meet Grandmaster Kang Suk Chong.
Shortly afterwards Grandmaster Kim called me to attend a seminar that General Choi
(Founder of Taekwon-do) was giving at his school in Bergenfield NJ. General Choi and
Grandmaster Kang Suh Chong both were at the seminar. Grandmaster Kim also did the
Patterns demonstrations for the General.

At that time I became a student of the General. Little did I know but that was
the beginning of a life time. That night is when we decided on starting the organization.
Master Kim and I worked on this and finally received the charter to run the organization.
General Choi was also with us that night when the plans were being formulated.
The organization we all love.

At that moment in time I never realized that I would be in Bergenfield, NJ once
a week. Master Kim and I would also travel to Canada about fourteen times a year.
We traveled extensive in those years. Extensive learning years.

At the first day of picture taking for the Taekwon-do Encyclopedia is when I became
Grandmaster Kim's student. From that time on we have had good times and bad.
Taekwonn-do and Knowing Grandmaster Kim and all of the other organization
members has made it a life time of pleasure. Only the beginning.

The first birthday party was the twenty seventh, just a few years ago.

The thing I learned the most from Grand master Kim.

         FAILURE IS NOT A OPTION

The best thing Grandmaster Kim ever taught me is that trying my best is more than enough.
The most amazing thing I've ever seen Grandmaster Kim do is the blind folded sword demo
My favorite Grandmaster Kim expression is "That's the rumor"

Over the generations, Grand Master Kim has been a critical influence to our organization, to his students, from Masters, senior belts and to color belts and to myself. I am continually amazed at his ability to translate his tremendous Taekwon-Do talents and communicate them into teachable segments that are understandable, concrete and measurable, regardless of the student's level of understanding. During every one of my interactions with Grand Master Kim in conversations, seminars and conference, I always learn something new which I strive to incorporate in my techniques or to better teach my students.

I wish Grand Master Kim a wonderful birthday and look forward to his continued leadership in the TKD International for many more years.
